A fresh bouquet can stay in good shape for many days if you give it a few minutes of care. These tips work for most cut flowers. Follow them on the first day and repeat the simple ones every day or two to keep flowers fresh longer.
1. Get the flowers into water quickly
Cut flowers start losing water as soon as they leave the vase or bucket. When your bouquet arrives, put it in water within the hour. If you are out, ask someone at home to put the whole bouquet in a bucket of water until you get back.
2. Cut the stems
Use a sharp knife or scissors and cut 2 to 3 cm off each stem at a slant. A slanted cut gives the stem more surface to drink from and stops it sitting flat on the bottom of the vase. Cut under running water if you can, so air does not get into the stem.
If the bouquet is hand-tied, you can keep the tie and trim the stems as one bunch. That keeps the shape the florist made.
3. Remove leaves below the water line
Leaves that sit in water rot and make the water dirty, and dirty water blocks the stems. Pull off any leaves that would be under water. Keep the leaves above the water; they help the bouquet look full.
4. Use a clean vase and fresh water
Wash the vase with soap and rinse it well. Fill it about two thirds with clean, room-temperature water. If the bouquet came with a flower food packet, mix it in.
5. Change the water every day or two
This is the step that matters most. Every day or every second day, take the flowers out, rinse the vase, add fresh water and trim a little off the stems again. Cloudy water means it is overdue.
6. Choose the right spot
Heat is the main reason flowers fade early, and Lahore summers are hot. Keep the vase:
- out of direct sunlight
- away from a heater, stove or the top of the fridge
- out of the direct air from an AC or a fan, which dries the petals
- away from fruit, because ripening fruit gives off a gas that makes flowers age faster
The coolest room in the house is the best place, especially at night.
7. Take out flowers as they fade
One wilting flower affects the water for the rest. Remove faded flowers and soft leaves when you change the water. The rest of the bouquet will last longer, and you can move the remaining flowers into a smaller vase.
Care tips for popular flowers
Roses
If a rose head droops, air has usually blocked the stem. Cut 2 to 3 cm off under running water and stand it in deep water for a few hours. Remove the outer petals if they are bruised; the rose underneath is fine. Shop rose bouquets.
Lilies
Pull off the orange pollen tips as each lily opens. The pollen stains clothes, tablecloths and the petals themselves. Closed buds will keep opening over the next days in clean water.
Tulips
Tulips keep growing in the vase and bend towards the light. Use a tall vase with only a little water, and turn the vase each day if you want them to stay straight. They like cool rooms more than most flowers.
Chrysanthemums and baby's breath
Both are hardy and last well with clean water. Baby's breath also dries well: hang it upside down in a dry, shady place and keep it as a dried bunch.
Flower boxes and arrangements in foam
Some arrangements sit in green floral foam instead of a vase. Do not take the flowers out. Add a little water to the foam every day so it stays damp, and keep the box in a cool spot away from the sun.
Fresh flower jewelry
Fresh gajray and other floral jewelry are made to be worn on the day. Until you wear them, keep them in their box in a cool place, such as a fridge shelf with no fruit near it, and mist them lightly with water. Take them out a little before you wear them.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I change the water?
Every day or every second day. Rinse the vase, add fresh water and trim the stems a little each time.
Why are my roses drooping?
Usually air has blocked the stem. Cut 2 to 3 cm off the stem under running water and put the rose in deep, fresh water.
Can I keep flowers in an AC room?
Yes. A cool room helps, but keep the vase out of the direct air from the AC or a fan.
Should I put sugar or aspirin in the water?
Flower food made for cut flowers works better. If you have none, clean water changed often is enough.
